Casa de las Estrellas
San Miguel Allende, Mexico

Experience the designs and colors of contemporary Mexican architecture in this award-winning house just five short blocks northeast of the Garden. Located in the Centro neighborhood close to the main market (for wonderful produce) and the artisan’s market (for crafts and folkart), “House of Stars” offers the visitor to San Miguel a special retreat that features the best of local craftsmanship using colorful tile and hand-polished colored concrete, as well as custom stone and ironwork.

This three-bedroom, two-bathroom house was designed by the architectural firm of House + House (with offices in both San Miguel and San Francisco), who have won numerous architectural awards for their work. “House of the Stars” has been featured in several books and design magazines, including the front cover of the recent book “The House to Ourselves”.
You start to see evidence of the award-winning design the moment you open the three-inch-thick oak doors gridded to step into a colorful oasis with walls painted in shades of cobalt, mango and sage. On the ground-floor level, you have a large open space where living room and dining room flow together. The living room has a gas fireplace, cable TV with U.S. stations and a stereo CD player as well as a new DVD player.
The dining room seats up to 10 people around an ancient wooden table. Up several steps from the dining area is the fully-equipped kitchen, served by a whole-house water purification system. In all rooms, there is great use of glass, bringing light and a sense of indoor / outdoor living into the house.
The main central stone courtyard floor has an amazing pattern, shaded by a 100-year-old pomegranate tree. This is a great place to lounge with your afternoon margaritas! Just beyond the courtyard, still on the ground level, is the master bedroom with its king bed and gas fireplace. The bathroom features polished concrete columns, colorful glass bead inlays and a decorative tile mural in the sunken shower.
Upstairs are the two guest bedrooms (one with a queen bed, the other with two twin beds), which share a bathroom with a 13-foot-tall cylindrical shower with a skylight for celestial viewing. In between the two upstairs bedrooms is a covered terrace for sampling the open-air living that is so typical of San Miguel. This area has Mexican icapalli (leather) furniture and a bar sink. From the upper roof terrace, there are views across the historic heart of San Miguel.
Casa de las Estrellas has local telephone service, cable TV with some U.S. channels, and high-speed WI-FI Internet access (for direct connection a cable is also provided). There is no extra cost for these services! The WI-FI router is located in the living room. Maribel the maid comes 3x weekly, from 9 am to 3 pm on Monday - Wednesday - Friday. She takes care of all the cleaning and laundry. (This house does not have a washer / dryer, but Maribel will take sheets / towels / laundry to the owner’s own house two doors away to wash, dry and fold.) Casa de las Estrellas is perfectly suited for 1 couple, 2 couples, or parents with children older than age 12.
